Addition of orthodontics office illustrates continued demand for retail space in the growing development

Meet the Stables Market Team - An Interview

Stables Market recently announced their brand new concept coming to Libbie Mill - Midtown in early Summer 2021. The new market will be opening in a brand new space on the northwestern corner of the Penstock Quarter building, overlooking Libbie Lake Pier. We conducted a brief interview with owner Steven Gooch to introduce this new market style concept to residents and visitors.

What inspired the idea for Stables Market?

“The COVID pandemic changed the restaurant industry almost overnight.  Suddenly dine in was gone or greatly reduced, take out became a larger or only outlet to reach customers, and yet all the fixed costs of kitchens and facilities, rent, utilities, core staff, still remained.  We needed to find an additional way to reach customers with the great food I knew Chef Evan was creating. “

Why are you excited to be at Libbie Mill - Midtown? What led you to choose it as the location for Stables Market?

“I know several people who live in Libbie Mill, and one thing I kept hearing was that a market was needed here.  I knew how successful several other restaurants had been implementing a grab and go market concept; and felt we could do it too. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to expand The Stables to a new market, while meeting a clear need for the neighborhood.  This is a growing, vibrant community, and it felt like something we should be a part of.” 

What sets Stables Market apart from other retail grocery stores? What products or services may customers expect to find at Stables?

“The Stables Market will be just that, a market.  We will be bringing restaurant quality food in a grab and go format, along with gourmet grocery items, produce, some staples, local products and crafts, and a few convenience items.  We will also highlight all the great craft beer brewed in the region and a great selection of wines.”

What type of experience may customers expect when they visit Stables? What is your message to folks that live, work or play at Libbie Mill?

“Being just an elevator ride a way for so many people, walking distance for others, we will provide the convenience of being able to grab a quick meal, a bottle of wine, desert, or just a bag of chips without having to get in your car.”

“We are doing our best to be open in May.”

Beginning March 29th, the Dog Park at Libbie Mill will be taken out of service to make modifications to improve drainage. This project will take at least one week depending on weather, and during this time the park will be closed to the public. The Stables Market is coming to Libbie Mill!

Henrico-based Gumenick Properties is pleased to announce that The Stables Market, an affiliate of The Stables restaurant in Richmond, has leased approximately 2,540 square feet in the Penstock Quarter building located at 5001 Libbie Mill East Blvd, adding to the growing list of retail services moving to Libbie Mill – Midtown. Planning to open in early 2021, The Stables Market will be an upscale local market with high quality grab and go food, craft beer and wine, and convenience items for the Libbie Mill neighborhood and surrounding community. To-go food will be prepared and pre-packaged daily by Chef Evan Campbell of The Stables restaurant. Peter Vick and Harrison Hall with Colliers International represented Gumenick, and Adam Lawson with JLL represented The Stables Market.

The Stables restaurant has achieved wide acclaim in the Richmond food scene since opening in 2017. Libbie Mill adds a dog park!

We are excited to welcome all dogs - large & small - and their owners to our brand new, public dog park! Enjoy 6,200 square feet of shaded, fenced, outdoor space right along Jordan’s Branch Trail.

The park feature fenced sections for large and small dogs, and picnic tables made from 100% recycled material.

Park Rules

  • Pet owners must pick up and dispose of waste immediately

  • No aggressive dogs are allowed

  • Dog handlers must be in view and in control of their dog(s) at all times

  • Pet owners are responsible for any injury or damage caused by their dog(s)

  • Dogs with registration and current vaccinations only

  • Limited to 15 dogs at a time

  • Persons under the age of 18 must remain outside of the gate at all times

  • No female dogs in heat

  • Animal and human food or treats are not permitted

  • In case of emergency, call 911

COVID-19 Guidelines

  • The danger of exposure to the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 exists, and by entering the dog park you take responsibility for your own protection

  • Do not use the dog park if you have a cough, fever or other symptoms of illness, or have been exposed to someone who has had a cough, fever or other symptoms of illness within the last 14 days

  • Maintain at least 10 feet between you and other people who are not a part of your household, both in and out of the dog park

  • We recommend wearing facial coverings when around people you don’t live with

  • Wash your hands often and don’t share items with people you don’t live with
